SIL and SDA, explained

SIL is the support

Supported Independent Living is help with daily life: personal care, meals, medication reminders, household jobs, getting to appointments, and building routines and skills. It lets a person live more independently, alone or with housemates.

SDA is the home

Specialist Disability Accommodation is the building itself: a home designed for people with very high support needs. You can get SIL in many kinds of home. SDA is a type of housing the NDIS funds for eligible participants.

SDA is the home. SIL is the help. They are separate supports in an NDIS plan.

The four SDA design categories

Every SDA home is built to one or more of these. The NDIA sets them.

  1. Improved Liveability

For people with sensory, intellectual or cognitive disability. Clear layouts, good lighting, and contrast between surfaces.

  2. Robust

For people with complex behaviours. Strong walls and fittings, less noise, and a quiet space to step away to.

  3. Fully Accessible

For people with significant physical disability. Step-free, with wider doors and halls, and a kitchen and bathroom you can reach and use.

  4. High Physical Support

For people with very high physical support needs. Step-free and wide like the home above, plus the structure for a ceiling hoist and backup power for essential equipment.

How it is paid for

Both are funded through the NDIS. The NDIA decides what goes in a participant's plan. We do not quote prices on this site.
